Asthma and Allergy

What is Allergy Allergic Diseases Common Allergens Identifying Allergens

The allergy is a special form of sensitivity in which substance quite innocuous (harmless) to most people provoke attack of allergic symptoms in a person suffering from allergic disease such as asthma. Common allergens are house dust mite, grass pollens and the fur and skin flakes of animals. Food stuffs including common constituents of meals such as milk and eggs may cause allergy, exceptionally.

It is worth that allergy may not necessarily show itself as wheezing symptom. There might be itching and redness of the skin, watering from eyes or running of the nose and sneezing; these may occur together with wheezing sound or in the isolation and called atopic diseases.

An Analogy

Let me tell a story. There were two monumental houses of tourist attraction. A guard was posted on the gate of one house while other house remained unmanned. Visitors had an easy access to unguarded. In the entry of other house also visitors did not have any difficulty since the guard was lazy and rarely checked the people. Most of the time the guard relaxed on a bench. Guard and visitors were comfortable and there was no problem. Then, there was a theft in the house with guard. Now the guard became alert, attentive and hyperactive. He allowed visitors only after a thorough search. In the search procedure many a times there was quarrel and altercation. In a scuffle sometimes the guard also used to sustain injuries.

Similar is the state of body's guard. A body defence mechanism is a parallel way of allowing or disallowing the foreign particles into the body through nostrils and mouth. A normal person tolerates most of the substances as unguarded house tolerated all visitors. An atopic person without allergic disease is comparable to the house guarded by a lazy guard. Both allergic and non-allergic substances are welcomed without any protest. However, an asthmatic child gets trouble when an allergen enters the body similar to the hyperactive & attentive guard gets injuries during encounter with visitors.
