ASTHMA IS A CONTAGIOUS DISEASE:  A MISCONCEPTION?
Example:
Sharda, 26 years old lady, has been suffering from bronchial asthma for last one year. Her disease is well under control with medicines. Sharda is a pious lady and respects advice of all well wishers. She has got 5 year old son. Six months ago her aunt had come from Nagpur and stayed there for two days. Sharda was very happy and cooked delicious food for dear aunt. While she was frying "Puris" she had bout of cough. Her aunt enquired about her health and suspected it as cold. Sharda explained that she had asthma for last one year. Aunt has suggested immediately that asthma can spread by close contact, and advised Sharda to keep her utensils separately, and child and husband away from her. Poor Sharda religiously followed her aunt advice. Both her husband and child started sleeping in a separate room.

Curiosity:

  • Can asthma spread by close contact.
  • How the problem was solved?
  • Why Sharda had bouts of cough on the day her aunt arrived?
  • Why Sharda decided to live in a separate room, away from her husband and child?
  • Was it a correct reason to live a separate life?

It was very difficult to compromise to separate the little kid. The boy used to weep without his mother's presence. He could not sleep without her mother. But apprehension of spreading disease prevailed in her mind. This practice of separation continued for 6 months. Then one day her husband asked his doctor-friend about this nature of asthma. The doctor laughed at him and said the asthma is not an infectious disease.

Expert Comments:

  • Sharda had asthma. Her asthma was aggravated due to kitchen fumes emitted during frying. Aggravation of asthma manifested as a bout of cough.
  • When Sharda realized that asthma is contagious disease she started living  in a separate room.
  • Living in a separate room was a wrong decision because asthma is not a contagious disease.

Respite from magic drug?
Example:
Vijaylaxmi had got asthma. To cure this disease, she was treated with Ayurved and Allopathy, but none of them succeeded to cure it completely. Then her husband  was transferred to Ghaziabad. Someone told her that there is a doctor who cures asthma completely. When she  reached there with her husband she saw in the crowd most of the people were praising the doctor's high ability of curing asthma. After a check-up of Vijaylaxmi the doctor assured that he would cure her 75% asthma within 3 days and next year it would be completely cured. Within 3 days Vijaylaxmi felt 95% relief. She could see the hope of approaching end to this disease. She took her medicines regularly for six months. The treatment was also very cheap. Vijaylaxmi health was also improving.

Curiosity:

  • How Vijaylaxmi got her asthma cured?
  • What was the secret of her cure?

Vijaylaxmi then received an issue of Asthma Sanjeevani in which effective but dangerous asthma medicine, steroid was described in detail. She was struck to read that issue because in those six months she had gained 10 Kg of weight. There was swelling on her face and hair grew out on her face and had lining spots on her stomach. She then consulted another doctor and showed him the white powdery magic medicine. It was found to contain steroid. On further probing it was discovered that the doctor was not a trained or qualified practitioner. Earlier he was a Compounder who had learnt the formula of magic drug from a Delhi based doctor. After coming to Ghaziabad he became a famous specialist.

Expert Comments:
Steroid is a dangerous medicine. It can cure immediately but side effects are higher.
